Bergamo is Città Bassa (the lower town)

Bergamo lower town is the “modern” half of the city, which developed mostly between the 19th and 20th centuries. Its heart lies alongside Sentierone, an elegant spot favoured by locals for a peaceful Sunday morning stroll. Then there’s the classical Porta Nuova and the two historical squares of piazza Pontida and Santo Spirito. This is also the heart of the shopping district, part of which is pedestrianised so a pleasant place for window shopping! Here also you’ll find the entertainment district of the town with the renowned Donizetti Theatre and cinemas.

How can you get here?

You can easily reach the city centre on foot via the Railway and bus station only a 5 min.walk away. By bus from the Railway and Bus Station or from Milan Orio al Serio Airport. Car parking is available.

What can I see in Città Bassa (the lower town)?

The so called Piacentiniano city centre is an early 20th century project that changed the aspect of that area and is well worth a visit.
Overlooking a square you can see the Civic Tower dedicated to the Fallen soldiers, the tree-lined pedestrian “passeggiata” Sentierone, the renaissance church of Santo Spirito and the baroque church of San Bartolomeo, both house of magnificent altar pieces painted by Lorenzo Lotto.
In the folds of the modern and lively lower town true architectural and artistic gems are hidden: the ancient frescoes housed in the dominican convent of Matris Domini, the Palazzo della Libertà, former head quarter of the Fascist party and gorgeous example of 20th century rationalist architecture, the Poste Palace with its interior decorations and paintings by Mario Sironi.

Why do I suggest to tour Città Bassa (the lower town)?

To have a full experience of Bergamo you can’t miss a visit to Città Bassa as rich in history and art as its hilly other half.
The posh city centre tells us about the development of the city’s urban fabric and social evolution over the centuries.
The best destination for shopping in town and not to be missed a cup of coffee in the historical bars under the porch of Sentierone.
