Bergamo is Painting
Bergamo was birthplace or home to several great painters, such as G.B. Moroni and Lorenzo Lotto. But it is also the land of patrons and “enlightened” nobles, like Count Giacomo Carrara, who supported artists and was founder of the renowned Art Gallery named after him.
What can I see?
For those who are fond of painting I offer several different tours: we can follow in the footpsteps of the venetian painter Lorenzo Lotto, admiring his gorgeous altar pieces, the beautifully preserved frescoes in San Michele at the White Well church and the wooden choir stall made after his cartoons in Santa Maria Maggiore. Otherwise we can visit the Accademia Carrara art gallery. This is a true treasure trove of paintings made between the 14th and 19th century: Pisanello, Mantegna, Raffaello, Tiziano, Lotto, Moroni just to name a few.
Why do I suggest a visit to Accademia Carrara?
First of all for the beauty, the importance, and variety of the works of art it houses, but also to learn about the benevalent story of the institutions birth and development. It’s a story that enables visitors to better understand bergamasque culture and highlights very well some of the traits of that culture, with its distinctive traditions based on the spirit of its citizens such as generosity, their habit of sharing everything with their friends and neighbours and most of all their strong sense of community.
